Chapter 17

“So, are you gonna let me know what the fuck is up, or what?” Meeko gritted his teeth. “Cause I really feel like you’re playing games with me.”

Josairah shifted around in the passenger’s seat of his car, trying to get more comfortable. “What are you talking about?” she grimaced.

His nostrils flared. “Don’t play stupid with me, man. Look at you. You’re sitting there with a belly out to here,” he stretched out his arms for emphasis. “Who the fuck stays at school the whole semester, never coming home to visit once, while they’re pregnant with somebody’s baby? I mean, I missed damn near the whole fuckin’ pregnancy.”

Josairah rolled her eyes. “You haven’t seen me in almost five months, and the first thing you want to do is argue?”

He cut his eyes at her. “Are you serious? That’s the card you wanna play right now? Like I’m some duck ass nigga?”

She blinked those long lashes. “What do you mean?”

He snarled. “What I mean is that I feel completely shut out. You called me here and there, but haven’t really let me be a part of anything. And now you’re coming around like everything is all good.”

She gulped, as she gazed out of the window, gathering her thoughts. It was true. She’d left Houston in January, and had never come back home, until the semester ended. It didn’t matter what the occasion was, she remained in California. For spring break, and Easter, her family had flown out to see her, since she’d refused to come home. During spring break, she felt like she and her parents’ relationship had for the most part returned to the way it was, before the pregnancy. Seeing her with a round belly, and finding out the sex of the baby, had aided them in coming to terms with the situation, and recognizing that they’d soon have a new addition to the family.

There had been no more crying over spilled milk, and Shay had fully embraced her daughter’s pregnancy. The whole ordeal was still a sore spot for Josh, but even he was a tad excited to meet the little guy growing in her womb. And the one thing that he’d made abundantly clear was that in no shape or form did she have to be with Meeko just because he was her child’s father. Josh had vowed to financially support her, and make sure that she was able to finish college. Nothing was changing. She was their responsibility, and they would provide for the baby too, whenever he arrived.

“Okay, I hear you,” she cleared her throat. “I know that I’ve been distant. It wasn’t trying to make you feel any type of way. I was just trying to deal with my own issues. This pregnancy has changed so many things in my life that you wouldn’t believe. Imagine your whole life changing overnight, and every time the people you love look into your eyes, all you see is disappointment. I was embarrassed. I feel like I let so many people down, and I needed to do some soul searching.
